Dr. Denton began teaching pre-college students while an undergraduate at Rice University.  She holds degrees in piano performance from Rice University (B.M., M.M.) and Indiana University (D.M.), and received full scholarships and assistantships throughout her studies.  While giving financial support, the teaching assistantships also provided valuable practical experience teaching both group and private lessons under the mentorship of many renowned pedagogues.  At Indiana University Dr. Denton was also a member of the Pre-College Faculty and completed extensive coursework in music education/piano pedagogy as a minor degree.  Dr. Denton is also the recipient of a Fulbright Grant focusing on research of the relationship of language and rhetoric in German classical era music (Hochschule für Musik, Freiburg, Germany).  She served many years as Director of Education at Brookline Music School, while at the same time maintaining a substantial teaching load as a faculty member. She relocated to her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama in 2014, where she plans to remain an active teacher. Former Faculty: Indiana University (Pre-College Department), South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Manchester Community Music School, Bridgewater State University, Longy School of Music, Brookline Music School.  Member: Music Teachers National Association, Alabama Music Teachers Association.

Performance Biography

Dr. Denton made her first appearance with orchestra playing Mendelssohn’s Concerto in G Minor with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra at the age of 13.  As a teen, she served as accompanist for the Indian Springs School choirs in her native state of Alabama.  This collaborative work served as an inspiration to pursue music professionally, and since that time, she has appeared in solo, collaborative and concerto performances across the United States, Canada, and Europe.
